EM in the U.S. has grown exponentially as a specialty, both in numbers of physicians as well as reputation over the past 50 years. Joe will summarize some key factors associated with this growth and describe the specific example of Mayo Clinic’s transition from a ‘traditional’ ER, covered by multiple specialties, to a department, and then to an academic teaching program, along with problems that arose in these transitions and how they were resolved.
Although Joe trained in Internal Medicine, he was involved in the formation of an academic Emergency Medicine Department and then helped in the creation of an accredited Emergency Medicine training program at Mayo Clinic. Thus, he will also describe how he was able to have a successful career in Emergency Medicine with his IM background and also about ways to promote wellness and ways to prevent burnout in one’s life.
